Choosing a RAID Configuration For Your Home Server ...

May 23, 2019  · You can skip the rest of this blog post. You should use RAID 6 or RAID-Z2. The easy thing to do is just use FreeNAS, set up RAID-Z2, and forget about it. These RAID levels have write performance issues, but they won’t get in your way. In fact, most people with a NAS at home won’t be impacted by the slower write performance of RAID-Z2 or RAID 6.

Also how do you access hardware RAID through FreeNAS? I like how FreeNAS emails you should your harddrive fails. Can this be done as well with hardware RAID?

FAQ?

Is it safe to use hardware RAID on FreeNAS?

Long story short, using hardware RAID on FreeNAS can lead to anything from corrupted writes to fatal errors that require you to invest in costly data recovery services. Deduplication is a much-desired feature for storage solutions.

Can you install FreeNAS on an old server?

So I understand that you can install FreeNAS on an old PC with multiple SATA drives, creating a RAID from within FreeNAS. But when I search around on the web to see how others used FreeNAS on an old server using SATA or SAS drives, they're always referring to setting up the RAID with a hardware RAID controller.

How do I create RAID volume in FreeNAS?

Give the Volume a name (here we chose “RAID”), click on the “+” button to add the available disks, then set the volume layout to “Mirror” (ie a RAID 1). By default, the maximum available capacity will be selected. Click on “Add Volume” (any data on the disks will be erased). Then check that the RAID volume is created correctly:

What kind of storage software does FreeNAS use?

They provide free and open-source enterprise grade network attached storage software. FreeNAS® uses the file system ZFS, which is not exclusive to FreeNAS® but is an extremely powerful file system, volume manager and software RAID controller in one.
