FAQ?

Is persistent pain a multi-dimensional experience?

Persistent pain is referred to as a multi-dimensional experience, and as such is a particularly enigmatic phenomenon. The following case study reviews a video vignette of a female with low back pain.

How is pain perceived and rated?

How pain is perceived and rated can be influenced by a patient's personal background and culture, as well as previous experiences with pain and pain management. Subjective signs may not be measurable but may be observed by a practitioner or reported by the patient.

Why is it important to diagnose and treat chronic pain?

The research backs this up. The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy says ‘ that prompt diagnosis and early treatment are needed to avoid secondary physical problems associated with disuse of the limb, and the possible psychological effects of living with undiagnosed chronic pain .’

What is the role of imaging in the treatment of pain?

Healthcare continues to resort to diagnostic procedures such as the use of imaging to identify pathology with the intention that “fixing” the pathology will remove the pain. This is still common practice despite the extensive imaging evidence that identifies similar pathology in a wide age range of asymptomatic populations (Brinjikji et al., 2015).
